The quiet luxury capsule in ten pieces

A good wardrobe is not a large one. It is a small set of pieces that agree with each other, so that every morning starts with a yes rather than a question.

Start with the coat: long, camel, double-faced wool. Add a navy knit and a cream one, a silk blouse, an oxford shirt, two pairs of pleated trousers in chocolate and cream, a slip skirt, a black midi dress, and one good leather bag.

Ten pieces, four colours, and almost forty outfits. Add a gold-buckle belt and suede loafers, and you are dressed for most of the year.

A slow morning in Paris

On the Rive Gauche the café opens at seven, and by eight the window table is the best seat in the city. A cappuccino, a leather notebook and a cream cable knit under an open camel coat.

We spent a week photographing our autumn edit there, between the bookshops of Saint-Germain and the quiet courtyards of the Marais. Nothing was rushed, and that is the whole point.

The pieces that travelled best: the cashmere crewneck, the pleated wool trousers and the soft leather tote, which held everything from film rolls to a baguette.

A Riviera weekend in linen and silk

Three days by the sea, one small bag. Our rule: everything must work with everything else, and nothing needs ironing.

Pack two linen shirts, wide linen trousers, the silk slip skirt, a swimsuit and a silk scarf that does four jobs: hair, neck, bag handle and evening shawl.

Add a straw tote and tortoiseshell sunglasses, and leave room for the lemons you will bring home.
